| "In recent
years, we've been euphoric, as Germany has given us several
outstanding vintages. But with the 2005s, we have entered
another realm of quality that has us bursting with more enthusiasm
for this vintage than any other! We've tasted enough 2005s
to conclude that there is something magical." - Robert
Parker, The Wine Advocate.
"Quality up, volume down! While the overall quality
is reported to be high, due to lower yields, quantities available
are much lower than average." - Bruce Sanderson
- Senior editor Wine Spectator.
"The German Rieslings of 2005 are a wonder! The consistency
and vibrancy of the wines - especially those from the Mosel
region - makes it easy enough to say: Go. Go buy some. Now!"
- Jon Bonne - MSNBC

Liberty
Wine Merchants had the pleasure of working with Monsieur
Thierry Fritch, Ambassador of Alsace while he was in
Vancouver promoting Alsatian wines. M. Fritch is an Agriculture
Engineer, MBA & oenologist and generously hosted a seminar/tasting
for our retail staff and a public tasting at our Robson Street
location.
Listed below are the flights of wine poured at both events with
tasting notes. For further information on Alsatian wines, please
RETAIL STAFF SEMINAR
AND TASTING - Wednesday, October 1st @ The Terminal City Club
1. HUGEL & FILS 2005 Pinot Blanc ($23.99*) -
This Pinot Blanc is delightful. Fruit forward and
round with the perfect amount of acidity to keep it clean
and refreshing. Not a complex wine but lively and delicious.
Great for sipping on its own.
2. DOMAINE WEINBACH 2004 Pinot Blanc ($44.99*)
- An elegant wine from a prestigious producer. This wine had
great complexity with flavours of subtle nectarine, grapefruit
and a hint of almond. Bright structure with a nice fleshy
texture.
3. DOMAINE MARCEL DEISS 2002 Engelgarten ($59.99*)
- This wine was decanted two hours before the tasting. Bright
gold in colour with intense aromas of pear, orange peel and
intense mineral notes. On the palate there was concentrated
flavours of sweet, ripe stone fruit, gunflint and minerals.
Fabulous texture with surprising finesse. A serious white
from this region. 90 points - Wine Spectator.
4. PAUL ZINCH 2005 Riesling Grand Cru Pfsersigberg
($43.99*) - Subtle fruitcake aromas on the nose with
a touch of honey. Dry, fruity and fresh on the palate with
earthy flavours reminiscent of the limestone/marl soils that
it came from. Still quite young and austere but has great
potential. Drink now or cellar for up to 10 years.
5. TRIMBACH 2001 Riesling Cuvee Frederick Emile ($74.99*)
- I have heard this producer be referred to as the
Alsatian "Riesling Specialist." This wine showed
us why. A dry-styled Riesling with classic flavours of apple,
citrus fruit and minerals. Regal, complex with an amazing
elegance. And a magical pairing wine with food; Asian, seafood,
pasta, you name it! 90 points Wine Spectator.
6. CAVE DE PFAFFENHEIM 2006 Pinot Gris ($21.99*)
- A well represented brand in this market. This wine is fresh,
straightforward and true to varietal. Rich on the palate with
delicious fruit and a touch of smokiness. Good balance of
sugar and acidity with a nice clean finish. A great sipping
wine. Also recommended from this producer: 2006 Gewurztraminer
(hard to say but oh so easy to drink).
7. PIERRE SPARR 2003 Pierre Sparr Grand Cru Mambourg
($39.99*) - This is a very special wine. Off-dry
with sweet aromas of honey and vanilla. Amazing structure
and expertly balanced. The palate has great focus with notes
of peach, faded roses, spice and a confident backbone of minerality.
If you get your hands on a bottle of this wine, you will thank
me later.
8. DOMAINE ZIND-HUMBRECHT 1999 Gewurztraminer Heimbourg ($77.99*)
- In a word: delicious. An wondrously rich wine with
concentrated flavours of juicy pear, candied fruit and rose
water. It has a slight sweetness but with enough acidity to
keep it from being cloying. The finish is luxurious and lingers
as long as you would want it to. 92 points - Wine
Spectator.
IN-STORE TASTING -
Thursday October 2nd @ Liberty Wine Merchants on Robson Street
1. HUGEL & FILS 2005 Pinot Blanc (23.99*)
This wine showed as well as it did the previous night.
Simple, fruity, easy drinking.
2. TRIMBACH 2005 Riesling ($33.99*)
More restrained than the Pinot Blanc with added complexity.
A perfect wine to pair with a variety of different foods.
3. TRIMBACH 2004 Reserve Pinot Gris ($35.99*)
True to the Trimbach style, this Pinot Gris is complex,
restrained and elegant. Crisp and refreshing citrus and mineral
notes.
4. PIERRE SPARR 2006 Pinot Gris ($23.99*)
It was great to taste this wine right after the Trimbach
Pinot Gris. Same grape and similar flavour profiles but stylistically,
completely different. This Pinot Gris was much more generous
in its delivery with more fruit and a more lush and creamy
mouth feel. This wine would pair well with a variety of different
foods but chances are, it wouldn't last past the appies...
5. CAVE DE PFAFFENHEIM 2006 Gewurztraminer ($22.99*)
Last but certainly not least Gewurztraminer: the
flagship varietal from this region. Low in acidity, soft fruit
on the palate with flavours of peach, pear, lychee and rose
water. A consistent wine that goes tremendously well with
spicy Asian food. My personal go-to curry wine.
GO ALSACE! And you...go pick up a bottle.

DID YOU KNOW that
the larger the bottle, the more likely the wine will age gracefully?
Magnums, especially, make a perfect cellar standard.
If you decide to celebrate an occasion with an extra-special
size; you'll want to follow a few guidelines:
- Since cradles are usually only available for 750ml sized
bottles, have some very reliable friends or family around
to help you tip the bottle on a table
- Ensure that you pour into a decanter, never directly
into wine glasses. These wines always need decanting.
- Finally....pour very carefully!
Beyond the familiar bottle size we all know -- 750ml,
aka a 'fifth' -- there's a whole world of wine in much larger
formats awaiting us. |
